We were so shocked! They told us they thought they saw another baby, but they weren't sure. We had to reschedule when I was a little further along to be positive. It was an interesting experience wondering what I was having for almost two weeks.
I was almost 17 weeks when I found out about my twins. I was alone and not expecting to get an ultrasound at the appt. The tech was so casual when she said "did you already know you are having twins?" I thought she was joking and then about fell off the table. It was very fun to be able to tell my hubby and show him we were having 2 boys. I still rate it as the biggest shock of my life.
I wish I had a more romantic story, but I swore for 10 minutes when we found out we were having twins. We were with a midwife, so my first ultrasound was an NT scan at 13 weeks. The tech put the wand on me and said, "You are aware there are two?" Um, no. I was not aware.
I was at my first doctor appointment, at either 8 or 10 weeks (how sad that I can't remember), and did not think they would do an ultrasound so I was alone. She pulled up a little ultrasound machine and said "uh" followed by "I don't want to alarm you but I think I see two". Holy s#@$!! I couldn't stop shaking and thinking, "what am I going to do with two of them?" I drove the 2 miles to my husband's office, walked in and burst into tears. Luckily it's turned out to be wonderful. :)
I was very early, 6 weeks. I had some bleeding and cramping so I went in because I thought I may be losing the baby. When I got the ultrasound she showed me and said "do you see that?" I said "is that two sacks?!" she said "yes" I said "twins?!" yep, twins. I was filled with an unidentifiable pressure and tickling sensation in my chest, I was laughing, in shock, I wanted to run off the table and announce to the world that I was having twins. But when I got home and told the dad to be u burst out in tears. I had very mixed feelings until I saw their sweet faces, now I feel slightly sad for those that have only one! I think I expect all babies to come in twos now. The best thing that ever happened!
I found out at a 6 week ultrasound that I was having twins. The ultrasound technician found a heartbeat and we were so thrilled and excited. Then she kept looking and said, "Yep, there's another one" (she was apparently clued in to the possibility due to my elevated HCG level). My heart just about jumped out of my chest. My husband excitedly asked, "Are there any more?" which was so far from my comprehension! My first thought was, "How am I going to go grocery shopping?"
Due to the use of fertility drugs we knew multiples were more than likely to happen in our case. When we finally found out we were pregnant, we went in for our first ultrasound at 6 weeks and found out we were having twins. Though overjoyed (as it took us three years to get to this point) my husband ask the doctor to double, triple and quadruple check to make sure there were only two...the Octomom had just revealed herself and he just wanted to make sure :0) Family members were the ones shocked in our case!
I was only 8 weeks and the Doctor decided to bring in the portable ultrasound machine. As I looked at the screen the doctor simultaneously said "So do twins run in your family?" I believe I said bull sh*t and "are you serious?" she said "Why do people always think I am joking when I tell them they are having twins. I wouldn't kid about a thing like that." Then I knew she was serious. When my husband got home he also used some expletives. After it sunk in we couldn't have been more excited!!
My mom had come with me to the ultrasound - I was about 9 weeks along. Thank goodness she was there, because to say I was shocked would be an understatement. I already had two older sons, plus my husband's brother and his wife had recently had twins, so we figured the odds were good that we'd continue the singleton trend (after all, "who ever hears of two brothers each having twins?"). When the doctor said I was measuring big, and asked me if I was sure if I had the DOC dates correct, I still didn't think it could be two in there. Until she did an abdominal u/s, and declared, "Well, that explains it - hello baby! and hello baby!". Um...what???? When I called my husband I said, "Hey, do you think your brother would be willing to lend us some of their twin baby gear?". His response was that I had five seconds to tell him I was joking. By that night, we sat there both excited and shocked. I was scared at the time, but can't imagine life without these two funny little dudes now!
My husband and I weren't trying to get pregnant yet so when I missed my period I chalked it up to all the endurance training I was doing preparing to run the Portland marathon. Two weeks later and still no period I thought I'd better get a pregnancy test which was instantly positive. My husband and I were thrilled to find out we were going to have a baby. There are no twins in my family so the possibility of multiples never entered my mind. We went in for a 18 weeks ultrasound and as soon as the tech put the probe on my belly we saw two heads and my husband and I both looked at each other like "are we seeing what we think we're seeing?" Then the tech said "do you have multiples in your family because there are definitely two in here". It was a good thing my husband was already sitting because I think he would've keeled over in shock. I remember feeling really shocked but also super happy and excited.
At our 6 week appointment with our fertility doctor, he scanned and said "well, there is baby A." My husband and I looked at each other and apparently both were thinking the same thing - why would he call it "baby A" if there was only one baby.....ten seconds later he points to another beating heartbeat and says "and there is baby B." We knew the chance of multiples was significantly higher in our situation and were grateful that he did not make it further into the alphabet counting babies. The completely shocked reactions are what we experienced when we spread the news to family and friends - and I will never forget their faces!
Since it was my second pregnancy my husband didn't come with me to the first appointment at 9 weeks...we figured we had been through this before and nothing much happens the first time. My midwife decided to do an ultrasound since I had had some bleeding and (oddly enough) low HCg levels. We were laughing about all of the people at my work who were convinced I was having twins because I was already showing...she said it was highly unlikely since my levels were showing low when they would be doubled with twins. Then she did a double take as she got the ultrasound into position. She said, "well, I take it back, there are two babies in there!" I kept saying, "are you serious?" "are you kidding?" over and over again until she made me look at each sack and got them positioned right next to each other so I could see that there was no question. I was shaking like a leaf. When I left the room the first person I told was the guy drawing my blood...then I called my husband and his first words were, "Oh shit!" I couldn't get mad because I was feeling the same way! I got used to it after about 2 or 3 weeks and now I wouldn't have it any other way!
I had done fertility treatments so I knew the possibility of multiples was high. At the ultrasound I had prior to my successful IUI the doctor told me that I had two good eggs and two ok back up eggs.
When I found out I was pregnant we had an ultrasound at six weeks. After the excitement of the initial sighting and heartbeat, we asked the doctor if there were two babies and she said "no, I only see one". About a minute later she said "wait, I spoke too soon, there is two!". My husband and I were silent for a moment and then he said "well, all right then". I proceeded to keep asking the doctor "there is just two, right?" over and over again. (I think I may have been in shock a bit, lol!) I even asked again after the ultrasound was over and I was getting dressed again. Of course, after the initial shock we were so excited and I cannot imagine my life without my two little cuties!
This was my 3rd pregnancy. Early on I was already feeling bigger than the previous pregnancies which is pretty normal. Whenever I said anything to my husband he would always tease me that it was twins. At out 1st appointment at 8 weeks I told my doctor that I felt like I was much further along than I had first thought. She told me that the 3rd pregnancy usually feels like that. I think she was just as surprise as we were when she did the ultrasound. "I think I see 2 babies here. Yep there are 2." My husband and I were pretty shocked that his teasing was correct.
At my first ultrasound my fertility doctor was out of the office, so we saw his partner. He told us we were having twins, 2 of our embryos took. The third was too small and had no heartbeat, it would be absorbed by my body. I remember asking him, "are you positive its not triplets?" and he responded by saying doctors never promise anything :) At the next appointment my regular doctor had returned and was afraid to look. There were THREE good embryos dancing around in me. We were both excited and frightened. My husbands first comment was what type of vehicle we would need to buy! I returned to work that morning and was in shock all day, shaking, sweating, and not teaching my students very well.
We adopted our twins so we found out when a social worker handed us a photo of two adorable little girls and asked us if we wanted to be their parents. I cried for 15 minutes straight, I felt like I just won the lottery and I couldn't believe that we had been chosen to be the parents of these sweet little girls.
